The Weight of Clouds: A Hidden Reality in the Qur’an

Clouds appear soft and weightless as they float across the sky, yet modern science reveals that they carry an astonishing weight. This article explores how the Qur’an mentioned this fact over 1400 years ago, long before scientific discoveries confirmed it.

Quran 13:12
هُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُرِيكُمُ ٱلْبَرْقَ خَوْفًۭا وَطَمَعًۭا وَيُنشِئُ ٱلسَّحَابَ ٱلثِّقَالَ 12 It is He who shows you lightening, [causing] fear and aspiration, and generates the heavy clouds.

At a glance, a person may look up into the sky and think that the clouds look so light and even fluffy because of the way that they move and how peaceful it all seems. Yet, an article published by the USGS, which is the United States Geological Survey, tells us that “A 1 cubic kilometer (km³) cloud contains 1 billion cubic meters.” Alongside mentioning the fact that there are 500,000,000 grams of water droplets in clouds.

Cumulus Clouds

That is about 500,000 kilograms. To put this into perspective, 500,000 kilograms is equivalent to 100 elephants. This is one of the many miracles of the Qur’an.

How could someone 1,400 years ago possibly know that the clouds are very heavy when from our perspective they seem so lightweight?
