Deep Ocean Darkness and Underwater Waves

Looking into the vast oceans and seas of this world, all we can often see are endless waves that continuously crash against the shore.

Yet, we only see the surface. In fact, we’ve only explored less than 10% of our oceans, leaving much of our oceans a mystery.

These themes are also explored and explained in the Qur’an, not only providing guidance but also scientific knowledge and wisdom.

The given verse can be found in Surah Nur, which says:

Quran 24:40
40 Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds – darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light – for him there is no light.

Although one can easily see the darkness of the ocean, it would’ve been impossible for people at the time to determine to what depths the ocean went to. However, the most impressive miracle in this verse is the mention of “sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves.”

This phrase is claiming that there exists another set of waves under the visible surface waves that we can see. This is a recent phenomenon proven by science called internal waves, which are caused by differences in density in the ocean water.

Yet, these internal waves are invisible to see from the surface of the water, and scientists have only been successfully able to spot them using satellite imagery and airplanes.

Deep Ocean Darkness and Underwater Waves

In fact, the phenomenon was first discovered around 1893 by Norwegian scientist Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen, when his boat encountered friction due to a layer of freshwater and saltwater colliding together.

The Qur'an continuously establishes itself as a resource that proves science centuries later.
